Highlights:
- With the help of generative AI, users can ask questions, produce and summarize text, create and modify photos, and more on Apple devices.
- The integration of Llama 3 would probably be comparable to an agreement Apple signed with OpenAI, whose ChatGPT is presently the only third-party AI model in Apple Intelligence.
Reportedly, Apple Inc. is eyeing to partner with Meta Platforms Inc., Facebook’s parent company. The business competitors came to this move to stay competitive in a bid to incorporate cutting-edge generative artificial intelligence capabilities into hardware.
As part of the proposed agreement, Apple will incorporate Meta’s Llama 3 large language model into the Apple Intelligence feature suite, which is scheduled to debut on iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers later this year.
Apple Intelligence, announced earlier this month, will make its debut in the next few months with the iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and Mac OS releases. With the help of generative AI, users can ask questions, produce and summarize text, create and modify photos, and more on Apple devices.
Apple’s move to attempt a partnership with Meta is interesting, considering that the two businesses haven’t exactly been best business pals. When Apple made privacy modifications to its mobile devices in 2021, which made it more difficult for Meta to sell targeted ads, their partnership dramatically worsened. Meta estimates that the choice would have cost them USD ten billion in slashed revenue by 2022. They compete in virtual reality headsets as well.
However, the desire to stay ahead in the battle for generative AI might persuade both businesses to set those disagreements aside and agree to work together.
The integration of Llama 3 would probably be comparable to an agreement Apple signed with OpenAI, whose ChatGPT is presently the only third-party AI model in Apple Intelligence. Even though Apple has created some of its minor LLMs internally, it has stated that it will outsource more challenging work to outside companies.
When a user asks Siri a problematic question, such as “How to cook a five-course meal featuring different tastes?” Apple claims that it will check if the user wants to submit that request to ChatGPT. If the user consents, ChatGPT will provide the solution within Siri. Furthermore, ChatGPT will be accessible on Apple via its Writing Tools panel for users who need to produce content, including emails or essays.
As per the conditions of Apple’s agreement with OpenAI, ChatGPT is prohibited from gathering user data and is required to erase any conversation records immediately after the user concludes their interaction with it.
Although OpenAI is the initial partner to be named, Apple has expressed a desire to work with other AI developers and has allegedly discussed employing Google LLC’s Gemini LLM family and startups such as Anthropic PBC in negotiating phase.
Report claims that Apple’s agreement with OpenAI will not involve financial exchanges. Rather, it will enable OpenAI to offer ChatGPT premium memberships through Apple Intelligence, with a commission paid to Apple as these payments would be made through the Apple App Store.
Given that Meta’s Llama 3 model is among the most well-known open-source generative AI models available, it’s unclear if Meta would be amenable to a similar arrangement. There are no charges to access it.
