Highlights:
- Initially, AI Overviews will utilize Gemini 2.0 to generate responses for the U.S. users submitting coding or advanced math queries.
- AI Mode is powered by a specialized version of Gemini 2.0. It employs a technique called query fan-out, which involves running multiple searches and synthesizing the results into a comprehensive response.
Google LLC introduced two new artificial intelligence features for its search engine that assures users to find information quickly.
The first update is an improved version of AI Overviews, a feature introduced last May that provides natural language responses above standard search results. Google is now upgrading this capability to its latest Gemini 2.0 series of large language models.
While the company has not specified which exact model AI Overviews will use, the most advanced in the Gemini 2.0 lineup, Gemini 2.0 Pro, can process prompts with up to two million tokens. Google claims this model outperforms its predecessors in interpreting complex queries, generating code, and applying general knowledge.
The Gemini 2.0 series also includes the efficiency-focused 2.0 Flash-Lite model, which delivers higher response quality across various benchmarks while maintaining the cost of a midrange LLM introduced last May.
Initially, AI Overviews will utilize Gemini 2.0 to generate responses for the U.S. users submitting coding or advanced math queries. The upgraded model will also handle multimodal queries, promising more accurate results compared to its previous version.
“With Gemini 2.0’s advanced capabilities, we provide faster and higher quality responses and show AI Overviews more often for these types of queries,” Robby Stein, Vice President of product for Google Search, reported.
Google introduced these upgrades alongside AI Mode, an advanced version of AI Overviews designed to handle more complex queries. This feature is currently available through the company’s Search Labs beta testing program but is initially limited to subscribers of Google One AI Premium, which offers expanded AI capabilities beyond a standard Google account.
AI Mode is powered by a specialized version of Gemini 2.0. It employs a technique called query fan-out, which involves running multiple searches and synthesizing the results into a comprehensive response. These answers can span multiple paragraphs.
In generating responses, AI Mode pulls information not only from web pages but also from Google’s Knowledge Graph system, a repository containing factual data such as sports scores, stock prices, and weather updates. Additionally, it incorporates details on billions of products, enabling more precise answers to shopping-related queries.
In the initial testing phase, Google will gather user feedback to refine the feature’s accuracy and interface. The company also plans to roll out more extensive upgrades following these initial improvements. “We’re already working on new capabilities and updates, like adding more visual responses with images and video, richer formatting, new ways to get to helpful web content and much more,” Stein said.
